Do You Need More Room? Ever Considered A Porch?
When we expand our homes due to a lack of spaciousness we typically add a conservatory or orangery to the back of the house. You can also grow the front of your home by having a porch integrated into your entranceway.
A porch requires a much smaller investment than a large home extension and whilst it obviously doesn’t offer the volume of floor space that you get with a conservatory or orangery installation, it’s roomy enough to accommodate many of the items currently clogging up your hallway.
Which items are we referring to?
- Coats / Jackets
- Hats
- Scarves
- Shoes
- Umbrellas
Any proposed porch design should be appropriately styled and coloured to complement your residence so that it successfully enhances your entranceway, rather than spoiling its look. Hazlemere supplies porches in UPVC, brick and aluminium, plus a host of different colours, so there’s little chance of your chosen porch having an adverse effect on the aesthetics of the house.
The addition of a porch will also bolster home security as each of our porches comes with the very latest secure mechanisms, including high security handles and hinges, a multi-point locking system, a number of anti-bump/snap cylinders and dog bolts.
What about planning permission and building regulations?
You needn’t concern yourself about planning permission if the porch is a “permitted development”. It will qualify as this if it meets the following guidelines:
-
The ground floor area (measured externally) would not exceed three square metres.
-
No part would be more than three metres above ground level (height needs to be measured in the same way as for a house extension).
-
No part of the porch would be within two metres of any boundary of the dwellinghouse and the highway.
Building regulations approval doesn’t need to be obtained in the following circumstances:
-
The front entrance door between the existing house and the new porch must remain in place.
-
If the house has ramped or level access for disabled people, the porch must not adversely affect access.
