What Are Heritage Windows?

Heritage windows are designed and crafted using traditional techniques and by copying historic guidelines so that upon installation, they correspond with the original architectural styling of residences.

For that reason, and others that we’ll go into, they’re often selected as a replacement window solution by householders looking to restore and renovate a late 19th or early 20th century home either classified as ‘Listed’ or situated in a conservation area.

Strict rules are enforced by planners for replacement window projects at these types of property, but heritage windows generally appease planners because they acknowledge how successfully they can uphold a building’s character while bringing all the benefits of double glazed windows.

Classically styled with contemporary benefits

Heritage windows possess the charm of period timber windows with their wood effect finishes and authentic proportions, making them a ready-made like-for-like replacement for wooden windows, however, they also offer 21st century performance and practicality.

For example, old timber windows weaken and lose their quality over time, becoming a major cause of draughts and it’s difficult to stop that, whatever lengths of maintenance you attempt.

Heritage windows are draught-proofing, without the need for any upkeep, because of the high level of insulation provided by their UPVC or aluminium profile and double or triple glazed units.

Forms of heritage window

The flush sash window is the leading heritage window style, featuring openers that close into the window frame to create a perfectly flat finish.

Our cottage windows also fit into the category of heritage designs and contain Georgian bars for a classic cottage aesthetic in a Georgian style.

Georgian bar windows have a distinctive grid pattern (horizontally and vertically) and this detailing gives the impression that the windows consist of little individual glass panes.

A growing market

Demand for heritage windows is much stronger than it was only a few years ago – observe homes in and around your neighbourhood and you will come across lots of heritage-style installations.

They’re not just a fixture in old country cottages, listed properties etc., with many newer homes also looking to pull off the heritage look by having a believable modern imitation of a flush or cottage window installed.
