Check Your Windows For Winter And Keep The Cold Out

We traditionally spend lots of time indoors at home in winter and with the year’s coldest season getting closer, it’s best to ensure your property is prepared for it.

Your windows are a first line of defence against the elements and hold the key to cosiness.

So, scrutinise your window designs as they may be responsible for any noticeable cold spots and costly energy bills.

Use this blog to uncover if you have winter-ready windows or they need upgrading, with window covering ideas and guidance on replacement windows also given:

Look out for any gaps

Pockets of air can sneak through the slightest openings in your windows and impact on the standard of energy efficiency they offer.

Feel around the edges of your windows for signs of draughts and examine them closely for gaps or cracks in the frames and seals. Holding a lit candle next to your windows can also be a strategy of checking for draughts – when the flame flutters it’s telling you that yes, draughts are getting in.

If you want to retain your existing windows, any gaps will need to be sealed with caulking, excluders etc.

Add window coverings

The installation of insulating window coverings can also stop the escape of heat and transference of cold from the outside through windows.

Thermal curtains are thick enough to store some heat and keep the cold at bay. Cellular shades are also strong insulators due to their honeycomb-like construction trapping in air tightly, or you can use window film, generally made of polyester, for an added layer of insulation.

Invest in energy efficient windows

Unless you employ outside help for assistance, sealing your windows can be hard work, and the addition of window coverings will have minimal effect if air-leak issues are severe. Neither of the two recommendations will come close to insulating your space as successfully as modern energy efficient windows.

Purchasing new windows from our superb UPVC and aluminium window suites will obviously cost more than sealing or covering your windows, but they’ll do a much better job of eradicating cold air and promoting heat retention, vastly warming up the building and reducing energy costs.

Hazlemere’s double glazed windows easily surpass the standard requirement of a ‘C’ energy rating thanks to their insulating frames and low-emissivity glasses.

Energy efficient windows in a detached home

Building regulations state that trickle vents are required by law in replacement windows, a device that allows a small amount of ventilation to improve the air quality in rooms. They will therefore be included in any UPVC or aluminium windows you buy from Hazlemere. Order any of our window collections here.
