Colin and Annette live in a beautiful 1930’s house in Maidenhead, Berkshire. They have owned the property for 21 years and it’s where they raised their family, and now the time had come to replace their old and draughty original windows.
The original steel timber framed windows had lots of charm, so they were keen to replace them with new double-glazed windows that retained the look and feel of the originals.
Softline aluminium frames were selected for the slimness of frame and shape that emulates timber frames, with fluted mullions and transoms to match the style of the originals as closely as possible. Soldered, square-leaded lights were used to emulate the 1930’s leads.
Significant care was taken to ensure the new window design, openers and site lines were in keeping with the original build, particularly where the old and new windows sit together on the rear elevation. Some of the ground floor windows and doors at the back of the house are still original whilst the family decide whether to extend the property.
It was a pleasure to work with homeowners so determined to keep the house true to its 30’s self, with the non-standard external cills making an enormous difference to the end result.
The homeowners were also insistent that no obscure glass be used in the bathroom, which whilst unusual, is a brilliant result, with a bright room that boasts fantastic views from the bath!
Occasionally, there are windows that it would be a shame to replace, and this home had such a window. So, the large picture window on the landing is untouched, due to the fabulous, coloured glass panes in the original feature. The fascia, soffits and gutters on the house were also replaced.
Following an initial home visit, the couple visited our High Wycombe showroom to view our aluminium range, and see in detail, the profiles that we would manufacture their frames in, as well as the leads we had specified to match the originals.
The customers are delighted and as previously mentioned, currently considering a rear extension.
